39

I turned 39 years old last Thursday  I was planning to celebrate it with a good steak but instead I had my first ever bought sushi.  Okay, not actually sushi with raw fish but with imitation crab instead.  They call it california rolls.   I still think it's an improvement in my part.  I am so proud of myself because I did not gag on the fishy taste of nori.  I hate fishy taste and smell. However, I admire non-Japanese sushi eaters.  I see them as sophisticated and worldly.  I'll work on the raw fish before I turned 50,  I promised myself.   I would like to vary my diet and train my taste bud.

My goal is to be more active physically and socially.  I am shaken by the mass shooting in an elementary school in Connecticut that happened last Friday.  I, initially,  thought of my niece because my sister and her family live in Connecticut and there are not  many towns in that State.  I called my sister immediately upon hearing the news and she told me it was a town nearby.  My sister is upset.  This tragedy happened too close to her home.  I bet everyone is shaken when very young children were slaughtered in the very place that you think they were safe.  The sad part is it happened too many times in this country.  I cannot sit and watch anymore.  I am planning to get involve with this issue -- Gun Control.  I am considering homeschooling or moving back to the Philippines once Benji starts school if nothing changes...

Happy Birthday Malor =) Congratulations on your the sushi eating. Baby steps. I actually love those fake crabs and nori. =)

I am shaken by that Connecticut shooting too. It took all my resolve to drop Evan off to school today. My husband and I, like you, are planning to get more involved with gun control too. But I also think that the problem is much more complex than that, mental health issues, video games, culture of violence etc. Did you watch The View show today? It's the one with Chris Cuomo and forensic psychiatrist Dr. Michael Welner? Very informative.

Merry Christmas, and you should try the vegetarian sushi, you might like it.

Congratulations on your birthday. It sounds like I am just a few months older than you. 73 was a good year!

Welcome to the world of sushi. I would never start people off with raw sushi sliced over a ball of rice. I would start you off with the non-raw kind like what you had in a roll and then move up to a roll that has some raw fish in. The latter is the majority of the sushi I eat. Then you can move up to the large raw fish that isn't in a roll. But that definitely has a lot more fish taste to it.

Because I have a first grader, the shooting really hit home for me too. I hugged my daughter a little bit harder when she got home from school on Friday. Fortunately since she is going to a religious school, she had already been praying for the kids and the shooter before she got home. That is all that we can do ourselves. I also keep reminding myself that the chances of dying in a school shooting or at a movie theater or at the local mall is less than winning the lottery. Still like Geri, I am hoping that we put tougher gun laws back in place on assault rifles, large ammo clips and making it much tougher to buy the things without a background check.

Even if all that doesn't happen, I still think an education here in the United States would be hard to beat elsewhere.

@Geri, I did not see The View. I don't get ABC in my TV. I have a poor reception. But I'll look for it online.

You are right about the complexity of this problem. I was just listening on and off on the radio today regarding mental health. Then, while in the gymn, one of the TVs was on WWE show. I just cannot see those violent shows anymore.

@Ed, 73 was a good year indeed but when i was younger i was hoping i was born in 74 because most of my classmates were 74. i was embarassed bec. i was older than most. i got over it now. thank God.

Thank you for your sushi pointers. I bought my sushi in Gateway Market in DSM, thinking that it would be better quality than HyVee. I saw those sushis with large piece of fish over it. Looks good but I know I will not be able to handle it for now. I don't know why I have this fish phobia. I grew up in the Philippines and ate fish a lot when I was younger bec. meat is expensive. My family is not very creative with cooking fish. Most of the time they just boil it in vinegar with ginger and salt. Maybe, I assoiate all fish with vinegar-boiled fish taste.

You are right about education here. I am just writing like that out of fear of losing my child that way...

Gateway is slightly better than Hy-Vee but in either place, always order it freshly made for you and it tastes better than something that has been sitting in the display case for awhile. That is what I do and Hy-vee is always happy to do so.

But saying that, there is a ten times better taste to be had if you do to one of the numerous sushi places in Des Moines. Most of them have a variety roll platter or a special where you can get several rolls for a low price. For the best sushi, we loved Miyabi 9 downtown. It was higher priced and not much seating so it was much harder to go to. Mostly we ate at Samurai Japanese Steakhouse out by Jordan Park Mall. It had excellent sushi, lots of seating and especially during the daytime is a lot more reasonable priced. They also had a bento box that was essentially fried chicken fillet and rice that our daughter loved to eat since she won't eat sushi...yet.

Hi Ed, I did not order it fresh. I got it from the display case. I was asked by the sushi guy if he can help me. I was shy so I said I'm okay. Next time...

I'll try those places....Thank you...

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy birthday Malor ! Wishing you continued happiness, success, especially good health to you & to the rest of the family !

I love Japanese food :D ! Before I do order sushi. Thought why not learn how to do it since it's pricey. My friend taught me and thanks to you tube for all the videos :D ! Now, I am a sushi master hahaha !

The world was shaken ! I hope and pray for all the families who have lost their loved one. I just hope that the state will do something about this. Take care and glad your sister is safe and the rest of her family !
